چکیده

The purpose of this paper is to provide a comparative study of nonmonotonic syntax-basedconsequencerelations, from different points of view. Starting from a (not necessarily consistent) belief baseE and a pre-ordering on E, we first remind different mechanisms for selecting preferred consistent subbases in syntax-based approaches. Then, we present three entailment principles in order to cope with these multiple subbases. The crossing point of each generation mechanism and each principle defines a syntax-based consequence relation. Pursuing previous work of the authors concerning the computational complexity point of view, we first provide a comparison from the cautiousness point of view. Our proposal restates previous results [18] in a single framework and provides new results. In the last part of this paper, we study the validity of deduction rules (such as those introduced by [15, 12]). Results are discussed in the conclusion.

On the Complexity of Non-monotonic Entailment in Syntax-based Approaches

The purpose of this paper is to outline various results regarding the computational complexity of non-monotonic entailment in diierent syntax-based approaches. Starting from a (non necessarily consistent) belief base E and a pre-ordering on E, we rst remind diierent mechanisms for selecting preferred consistent subsets in syntax-based approaches. Then we present diierent entailment principles i...

Supraclassical Consequence Relations - Tolerating Rare Counterexamples

We explore a family of supraclassical consequence relations obtained by varying the criteria according to which counterexamples to classical entailment may be deemed tolerable. This provides a different perspective on the rational consequence relations of nonmonotonic logic, as well as introducing new kinds of entailment with a diversity of potential contextual applications.

Non Monotonic Reasoning and Belief

The major approaches to belief revision and non monotonic reasoning proposed in the literature diier along a number of dimensions, including whether they are \syntax-based" or \semantic-based", \foundational" or \coherentist", \consistence{restoring" or \inconsistency{tolerant". Our contribution towards clarifying the connections between these various approaches is threefold: We show that the t...

Constrained Consequence

There are various contexts in which it is not pertinent to generate and attend to all the classical consequences of a given premiss — or to trace all the premisses which classically entail a given consequence. Such contexts may involve limited resources of an agent or inferential engine, contextual relevance or irrelevance of certain consequences or premisses, modelling everyday human reasoning...

Power Defaults ( preliminary report )

We present a spectrum of default logics, using powerdomains to encode default constraints. The resulting non-monotonic entailment relations all satisfy the law of reasoning by cases. This result is a consequence of two general theorems valid for any Scott domain: the Di-chotomy Theorem and the Extension Splitting Theorem. We brieey indicate that for propositional logic, the complexity of entail...
